Coming from the people who brought you the excellent Blues Power: Songs of Eric Clapton, it's no surprise that this tribute (oops, the CD cover says, ''This Ain't No Tribute,'' sorry) features a lot of the same musicians. This anthology is likely to upset purists, who may not actually want a Delta-style ''When the Levee Breaks'' (courtesy of Magic Slim), but check out that harp work from James Cotton on the more upbeat, Chicago version! And Alvin ''Youngblood'' Hart's take on ''Heartbreaker'' si

One of James Cotton's best known and loved albums, 100% Cotton is a reference point for all fans of high voltage R&B. The ebullient Chicago harp wizard was at his zenith in 1974, when this cooking album was issued on Buddah. Matt 'Guitar' Murphy matched Cotton note for zealous note back then, leading to fireworks aplenty on the non-stop Boogie Thing, a driving How Long Can a Fool Go Wrong, and the fastest Rocket 88 you'll ever take a spin in. Packaged in thick cardboard digipak.

This Ain't No Tribute Blues Cube

In case anyone missed the individual releases of these CDs earlier in 1999, House of Blues conveniently presents all five in one handy package. Though the albums do fit the definition of a tribute, despite this box set's title, they're often decidedly odd; Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan certainly never sounded like this before. In general, it works. Zep's ''When the Levee Breaks'' was always a blues tune; Magic Slim just returns it to its Delta roots.

John Lee Williamson, the first Sonny Boy (some would say the only), is first glimpsed riding a bike around his native Jackson, Tennessee, in pursuit of Yank Rachell, the mandolin-playing erstwhile partner of another Brownsville resident, Sleepy John Estes, with a view to making music together. The impression Rachell gave was of Williamson being an eager young man who was a bit of a nuisance. In reality just four years separated them but Rachell was the seasoned traveller and Williamson the gifte

Some longtime Pig followers will grouse because dependable old albums by Chicago blues gents like Otis Rush and Mighty Joe Young are slighted, and this reviewer will keep kosher rather than hear the songs of Bill Perry

3-CD box set with with instructional CDs & accompanying book is a comprehensive & easy-to-use lesson on how to learn to play the harmonica. Portnoy, who's been in the Muddy Waters & Eric Clapton bands, realized other instructional materials put all of the explanations into the text of a book, and the accompanying sound reference consisted only of playing examples, so Jerry put everything on the CDs so you don't have to switch back & forth between the two. He starts at the very beginning on how t
