These are some of Mendelssohn's best piano pieces outside of the Songs Without Words. The early Sonata will be new to most listeners. But there's a good deal more Mendelssohn for piano, including two more early sonatas, and some of it would have filled out this disc very nicely. Murray Perahia plays with his usual artistry, although it seems to me that he's a bit ''big'' for some of this music, especially the Sonata, which I like to hear in a more modest scale. It's not a bad disc by any means,

Under the spell of a Bach festival, Shostakovich composed one of his masterpieces: this monumental tribute to the master of Leipzig. You can hear baroque polyphony throughout this music, along with Shostakovich's typical range of emotions from elation to despair--with lots of the latter. Any pianist who records this music must face the stiff competition of Tatiana Nikolaeva. Shostakovich wrote the music specifically for her, and she plays with awesome command and mystery. Ashkenazy runs here a v

Following its most successful recording, The Art of Fugue, the Emerson String Quartet again dedicates its mastery to the music of J.S. Bach. The quartet, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007, presents the world-premiere recording of the four-part fugues from the famous Well-Tempered Clavier as arranged for string quartet. Although all of Glenn Gould's Bach recordings are icons, this may be the most valuable of them. Unlike some of his Bach performances, Gould takes the marked repeats in the Partitas and adds imaginative Embellishments, as any competent player of Bach's day would have done. This practice adds a further element of interest to Gould's sparkling, alert playing, because it means we hear each section from different perspectives with meaningful performer contributions that go beyond ''interpretation.''

One of the most imaginative and compelling duo piano teams, Pierce & Jonas have been successfully performing and recording the unusual and neglected two piano repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries since the mid-1980s. The duo has appeared with many symphony orchestras world-wide including those of Houston, San Antonio, Mexico City and Luxembourg as well as the Royal Philharmonic, Philharmonia, National Symphony of Polish Radio and Television, (Katowice), Luxembourg Radio Symphony, Slovak Phi

The Music/Background: As Jarrett said in 1991, ''When I first saw these pieces in a music shop, I knew I wanted to play them. I recognised the language. But when I started playing them, they were so close to me that I knew I had to record them.'' He began including Shostakovich pieces in his recitals in 1985, alongside works by Beethoven, Scarlatti and Bach, and his Shostakovich recording followed his acclaimed account of the two books of The Well-Tempered Clavier. There was a musical-historical

1999 HYPERION RECORDS CD Even world-class virtuosos exhibit some hint of strain in these technically murderous works, but Hamelin sails through them with superhuman aplomb. Inevitably, a dimension of the music is lost, since struggle is central to Reger's concept. But there's so much more in compensation, as unhindered fluidity of movement and a refusal to allow technical limitations to dictate tempos give Hamelin the freedom to dig beneath the notes. He also disproves the stereotype of Reger's

Bach never specified what instrument or instruments he wanted The Art of Fugue played on; nor did he finish it. Fretwork, a group of six superb viol players, leave the work incomplete, stopping in mid-phrase--the effect is persuasive rather than unsatisfying. The sound of the six different-sized viols is just right for listening to the way Bach intermingles the multiple lines through and around one another--we can learn what counterpoint is just by listening to this CD. Some find the work severe

Intelligent programming, a highly developed musical sensitivity, and an extraordinary sense of the musical possibilities of the piano are the hallmarks of Jenny Lin's artistic personality. Her extraordinary range includes everything from hyper-virtuosic avant-garde experimentalism to critically acclaimed bravura readings of Bloch's romantic ''Concerto Symphonique.'' This new recording of Shostakovich's most extensive and impressive solo piano work has been unjustly neglected. Jenny Lin's insight
