The young pianist Olli Mustonen relies on exaggerated articulation in this collection of little-known Beethoven--a very interesting program. Is Mustonen trying to duplicate the sound of a fortepiano? (If so, he should have used one.) Or is he just trying out new effects at the keyboard? But the results of this playing style have to be heard to be disbelieved. It takes your attention away from the music and focuses it firmly on the pianist, which may well be his idea. --Leslie Gerber

This all-Chopin disc marked Mikhail Pletnev's debut as a pianist on Deutsche Grammophon. Although Pletnev's interpretive approach was castigated in some corners, his playing is admirable and extraordinarily manly, with a decidedly Slavic cast and yet with all kinds of elegance. One is struck repeatedly by Pletnev's crystalline arpeggiations, the velocity of his passage work, his singing tone, his rhythmic suppleness, and, above all, the grandeur of his sound. And does DG ever do a number on that

Praga's acclaimed Reminiscences series, which features SACD remasterings of historic recordings, turns to music of Debussy for this superb release of orchestral works conducted by the great French maestro Manuel Rosenthal. Taken from stereo tapes dating from 1957-58, the recording includes a broad selection of works, from the familiar to the rare. In addition to La Mer, Nocturnes and Jeux, the recording highlights the less well-known Salut Printemps for soprano solo and Invocation for tenor solo

TELA 80337; TELARC - Stati Uniti; Classica da camera Piano After conquering the Beethoven solo repertoire, pianist John O'Conor takes on Schubert's impromptus, which demand exceptional technical skill and a mature command of all of the piano's resources, from the most subtle coloristic effects to the grandest dynamic expressions. O'Conor makes sublime music from Schubert's scores--fully realized in passages such as the exquisitely beautiful opening of Op. 90, No. 3. --David Vernier
